Master the Basic Sound System of English

Learning a language involves learning the four skills of that language: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. That is why these four skills are tested in IELTS, TOEFL and other similar tests internationally. In Kerala, children learn to read and write English at school, but they don't get the opportunity to practice its oral skills, for in their daily life, they use Malayalam, their native language, for oral communication. They occasionally get the opportunity to listen to English channels and movies, which is not sufficient to make them proficient in the oral skills.

The schools can at least provide a basis for the children to build up their oral skills by helping them recognize  how the sound system of English is different from that of Malayalam. In Malayalam there is one-to-one correspondence between the letters and their sounds, but in English such correspondence does not exist. English is written with 26 letters, but spoken with 44 sounds. For example, the same sound of അ is represented by u, o, and oo in these words: cut, come, blood. That is why spelling exists in English.

Dr. John D. Kunnathu has developed a way for children to learn the basic sound system of English  even within an hour by relating its sounds to the sounds of Malayalam. The students get familiar with:
  1. the forty-four sounds in English,
  2. the syllable structure, and how one syllable is stressed over the others in a word, and
  3. how the content words are stressed over the structural words in a sentence.
